"It is our Schools who will spot talent before anyone else, it is the ultimate talent ID system."
It is my great privilege to have been elected to the role of WSFA Head of Girls Football for the 2018/19 season. The association has achieved significant success in opening up access for schoolgirls across Wales to participate and, ultimately, enjoy the beautiful game.

The fusion of education with sport is one of my great passions - pupils can learn so much about discipline, team work, resilience, communication and leadership from participating in sport. One of my other civic roles is to serve as Chairman of Swansea University Football Club - so I can tell you categorically that if we engage our children in football at a young age, their passion for the sport will not only last through their school years but onwards into their adult life.

The WSFA has made great strides in growing the girls’ game recent years. We concentrate on growing the game through engagement activities such as our Primary 5s festivals and our Inter-Schools competitions. The Primary 5s is a relatively new concept at the national level, but the initiative is already making an impact and is enabling more girls to play football at Primary School level. The Inter-Schools competitions are booming and there is no doubt that the WSFA interventions at Secondary School level is one of the key drivers in the growth of the girls’ game in recent years. Female participation in our schools competitions has grown by 20% in 3 years.

My specific focus is on developing and growing the WSFA Girls Inter-Association Competitions. This pathway is otherwise known as 'County Football'. Traditionally, the Schools Associations across Wales will invite nominations from their respective Schools and through a trial process will select a County Squad at U11, U13 and U15. Whereas the Primary 5s and Inter-Schools initiatives are engagement instruments, the Inter-Association provides a pathway and platform for the most talented female footballers in Wales. My objective is to grow the reach and significance of this pathway in conjunction with our Schools. Participation in girls County football is on an impressive trajectory, with a growth of 120% in 3 years up to 18/19 - but incredibly as we head into 19/20 the numbers of girls playing schools county football has rocketed by a further 40%!

The ability for WSFA to identify and nurture talent emerging from our Schools in Wales is enormously powerful. It is our Schools who will spot talent before anyone else, it is the ultimate talent ID system.

So whether its engagement or elite football, the WSFA girls’ pathway provides a high quality, well-structured games programme that allows talented girls from all over our nation to test themselves against the best footballing talent in Wales.

I would like to wish all of our associations the very best of luck for the season ahead. If you would like to contact me about my volunteer role at WSFA, then please email me at ceri.jones@welshschoolsfa.co.uk

Autumn 2018.
"This season has been a blockbuster with more girls than ever competing in our competitions..."
As we emerge from the dark and wet footballing months of winter and into the fairer days of spring, the attention for some now turns to the tantalising hope of glory as we hurtle towards “cup final” season. But whilst we, understandably, wish to wave goodbye enthusiastically to the stunted days of winter and beckon the sun soaked glory days of spring; we must also remember the hard work and commitment of the vast majority of players and coaches who participated in the WSFA Inter Association season but will not have the fortune to line up in a showpiece fixture. This season has indeed been a triumph for every single girl who has been selected to represent their county and I would like to congratulate them all on their wonderful achievement.

This season has been a blockbuster with more girls than ever competing in our competitions. One of my primary objectives for the season was the grow our reach into North Wales, whilst maintaining a steady trajectory in the mid and south. Therefore, it is with enormous satisfaction that we can report the incredible growth of schoolgirl representative county football across the North Wales corridor – the alacrity demonstrated by new entrants from Flintshire, Denbighshire and Conwy has been truly thrilling. These three counties have brought an exciting new dimension to the girls’ pathway and all the indications are that these associations will grow even further in 19/20 with the addition of new squads. Allied to this is the potential further expansion of the girls county pathway into North West Wales: these are heady days for the girls game in North Wales.

With the strong performance in North Wales, there has been further consolidation in the south too. There has been a strong representation in all age groups from Newport in the east through to Pembrokeshire in west. The challenge is to now maintain our growth and relentlessly improve standards and the overall experience for the girls on our pathway.

As I look towards the future, it is fantastic to see the strong platform that we now have for the girls’ game within the WSFA. The potential for the continued evolution of the pathway is significant, including the strengthening of links with the English Schools FA and the possibility of the introduction of a national representative squad to mirror our exciting development with the Boys pathway.

I would like to pay a huge tribute to the coaches across our associations and the WSFA Officers who make our competitions such an unqualified success. It is quite remarkable that this organisation continues to provide so many wonderful opportunities for schoolchildren without significant investments – but it is true to say that volunteers do not necessarily have the time, they have the heart!

Finally, I will wish all the WSFA Inter Association Finalists the very best of luck for the finals over the weekend of May 4th/5th – enjoy your day in the sun….

Have a great summer and see you all next season.
